Akena Adoko is dead
Publication date: Friday, 8th January, 2010
Dr. Naphtali Akena Adoko, the former head of the General Service Unit (GSU) during the Obote I regime of the 1960's has died. A close family-friend Dr. Jesse Mashate said he died Friday morning in a London Hospital. Mashate said this death follows another death of his son a few months ago. The GSU he headed is said to have been the department where some current Ugandan leaders previously used to work during the Obote I regime. He left Uganda after Obote was overthrown. His subsequent visits to the country were shortlived as he did not decide to settle back. He is widely known for re-uniting families of alliens in the UK by helping relatives get to live in the UK. In the Ugandan publishing industry, he is widely known for his book: From Obote to Obote. Dr Akena Adoko was a Papal Knight of Saint Gregory the Great. He was a President of the Uganda Law Society. He was an American educated Social-Anthropologist with a Master and Doctorate degrees in comparative law. He was also an English trained Barrister but had voluntarily opted to have himself disbarred in order to expose corruption within the UK public service. He authored a book on the Jeffrey Archer Scandal which is said to have exposed mercilessly the charges for which Lord Archer was later prosecuted. Dr Adoko also brought several cases of corruption against public offices such as Lord Chancellor, the Law Society and the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. In 2008, a clan thanksgiving was conducted to honour the life achievements of Akena Adoko. The details of that are contained in a story in the Promota Magazine. CLICK HERE to read more.
